You Decide
When my niece was only 4 or 5 years old, I was babysitting her and at my wit's end as to what game to play next. It seemed everything I thought of bored her almost immediately.
So, I came up with the bright idea that we would draw pictures of one another. She was more than happy to take on that little play-time project.
As she gleefully informed me that she was ready to show me her masterpiece, I erroneously imagined that I would resemble Cinderella or some other Disney princess that she loved so much.
Silly me. My bad. This picture is what I got.
REALLY?! THIS is what she sees when she looks at me?!
I mean, honestly, all I could see at the moment was some sort of pig that had been bred with a stray cat. (Actually, I still do.)
And for the love of God, what kind of attire is this? I’m not sure. All I know is that I can promise y’all that I’ve never walked around in a coconut bra and a tutu with what appears to be oven mitts on my hands.
But as I balked at the picture, I looked at her sweet, innocent face with those bright eyes shining as she joyfully asked if I liked it and I realized, “She thinks this is beautiful.”
And so do I.
Even though I still don’t see the slightest of resemblance between me and this drawing, I can see one thing:
We all have a different perception of ourselves than those perceived by someone else.
That concept has gotten me through many self-doubting moments.
A lot of times I perceive myself as not good enough, not smart enough, not experienced enough, or just plain not enough to get a freelance job.
But the people who give me opportunities tell me right the opposite.
They tell me they knew immediately after just one conversation that I was the perfect fit for their project.
They tell me that my skills and knowledge saved them from what could have been a nightmare waiting to explode into reality.
Their perception of me is slowly but surely becoming my self-perception.
And I love it.
